For the first time in its history the supermarket giant, which recorded a total net profit after tax of $1.72 billion in the 2023 financial year, is going to "deliver" an aged care facility.
Woolworths has submitted a development application (DA) with Noosa Shire Council to develop a 126-bed aged care facility in Cooroy, a rural town 135km north of Brisbane, and 20km from the coastal town of Noosa Heads.
"This will... be the first time we’ve proposed to deliver an aged care facility next to one of our supermarkets, showcasing how we’re tailoring this development to the residents of Cooroy," a Woolworths spokesperson said.
Woolworths owns the 6.6ha site of the proposed development, which is opposite Cooroy Golf Club.
Plans to include an aged care home in the site's development came about after community consultation revealed local demand for residential aged care services. More than 100 surveys were conducted with local residents through door knocks, flyers, and an online survey.
The supermarket operator will not build or manage the aged care facility, and is currently seeking an aged care operator partner.
The DA has two parts. Firstly, a Material Change of Use (MCU) application seeks to use the site for new purposes. And secondly, a Reconfiguration of a Lot (RAL) application seeks to sub-divide the plot.
