10 aged care homes closed in 2024, shutting nearly 800 beds

10 residential aged care homes closed their doors across Australia between 1 January 2024 and 20 November 2024, resulting in the closure of 769 beds.

The figures were provided by the Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC) in response to a question on notice from Senator Anne Ruston, Shadow Minister for Aged Care, in Budget Estimates in November last year.

The DoHAC also said that 2,022 new beds came online as a result of new facilities opening during that period, making a net increase for the 11-month period of 1,253 beds.

The number of operational places in aged care rose only 860 in the year to 30 June 2022, and 1,502 in the year to 30 June 2023, according to DoHAC figures.

While these latest figures do show growth in the number of beds coming online, the sector is still short of the estimated additional 40,000 aged care beds needed by 2030, or about 8,000 new beds a year, as forecast by aged care accountants StewartBrown.
