Hall & Prior finally takes ownership of troubled Kiama Council aged care home

1 min read

The ownership of the 134-bed Blue Haven Bonaira Residential Aged Care Home and its 59 Independent Living Units has been transferred from Kiama Municipal Council to Perth-based, family owned aged care operator Hall & Prior, effective 1 April 2025.

When first announced in July 2024, the $95 million sale was expected to be completed on 1 November 2024. However, the transaction has been plagued by a series of problems and delays. Two extensions to settlement were granted due to more time being needed for due diligence and transitional work. A $6 million price cut was negotiated in December due to the identification of building issues requiring rectification.

Graeme Prior, CEO of Hall & Prior, said, “We’re excited about the future and committed to enhancing the services and facilities for residents and the broader community for many years to come.

"As part of this, we’ll soon begin a series of upgrades, starting with improvements to the Independent Living Unit bathrooms and Barroul House,” Graeme said.

“We’re investing $1.2 million in refurbishments that we know residents have been looking forward to,” he continued.

Blue Haven Bonaira had cost Kiama Council $105 million to build, $30 million more than the original cost, and the project was blamed for the Council's poor financial positionThe home lost $660,000 in July 2022 alone.

Hall & Prior, which was recently recognised on IBISWorld's top 500 Companies, has 39 residential aged care homes and in-home and community care programs across Western Australia, New South Wales and the ACT.
