Kalano aged care in Katherine, NT, back in community hands

1 min read

The operation of Kalano Flexible Aged Care Centre in Katherine, about 320km southeast of Darwin, which has been managed by the Australian Red Cross for 13 years, will be transferred to the Kalano Community Association Incorporation (KCAI) on 28 September 20, bringing it back under the management of the local First Nations community.

Australian Red Cross Director Northern Territory, William Daw, said the Australian Red Cross had supported the aged care facility at the request of the community to ensure the valuable service could remain open, but it was always the intention for management to return to KCAI in the long term.

“The service has performed strongly and with the approval of the Department of Health and Aged Care, we are so pleased to be transitioning management back to community," William said.

“This is great success story and will help ensure services reflect the needs and goals of the local community, being designed and delivered by local people.”

Australian Red Cross and KCAI will work together over the coming weeks to minimise disruptions to clients, families, staff and the local community, to ensure a smooth transition.

The SOURCE: First Nations make up about 3% of the residential aged care population, with many living in remote communities, such as Kalano Flexible Aged Care. These are valuable community organisations, ensuring older First Nations can remain living in their communities as they grow older. The Australian Red Cross has provided a valuable service in helping the facility stay open.
