Canberra golf club defects from Clubs ACT to get planned retirement village off the ground

Golf clubs across the country continue to seek out retirement villages as a financial savior.

The Federal Golf Club has joined up with the new Canberra Community Clubs group in a bid to get a proposed 125-unit village approved for its land at Red Hill, south of the city centre, across the line.

The Canberra Times reports that ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has been refusing to deal with Clubs ACT since it ran a campaign against Labor at the last election.

The Club is asking the Government to waive or discount the lease variation tax – which will cost the club millions and could potentially affect their future viability – on the multi-million-dollar development.

“It basically comes down to what’s in the best interests of the club to get that development through,” General Manager Scott Elias said. “We want to get it through this time and we will do everything we can.”
