ABC’s Retirement ‘Rip-Off’ exposé rejected Catalyst Research’s extensive research into retirement living

1 min read

Kevin McCreton, Managing Director of Catalyst Research, said he was contacted by the taxpayer-funded broadcaster as it was gathering research in Victoria for its alleged exposé of retirement living.

"I was contacted unexpectedly by ABC on 21 August as they gathered details of resident experiences. I shared the bare bones of the wellness finding from the most recent edition of The Catalyst Report – Retirement Communities, which is insights gained from 12,640 Australians, hoping to provide an alternative viewpoint to their initial narrative. The ABC chose not to pursue this angle," he said.

"I’m concerned that Australians will see the whole industry in a bad light based on the recent ABC reports. 72% of residents rate their village/site 8, 9 or 10/10 overall. Certainly, the sector is a ‘mixed bag’ with some outstanding providers and some poor operators. But this rating based on an independent sample of 3,392 respondents demonstrates that average satisfaction is high."

The ABC ran two broadcasts on its alleged exposé of retirement living malpractice and several stories. Reporter Adele Ferguson was interviewed on several ABC radio stations.
