After four years Casa Mia in regional Queensland to be rebuilt as supported retirement living

The 11-bed Churches of Christ Inglewood Aged Care facility in the rural town of Inglewood, 90km east of Goondiwindi, was forcibly closed in 2020.

Now Goondiwindi Regional Council has appointed a contractor, ICM Constructions, for the $2.26 million refurbishment of the site. Queensland Government has committed $1.5 million.

The construction of five one- and two-bedroom independent living homes will be for seniors who are still able to enjoy supported independent living and want to remain locally.

Goondiwindi Regional Council mayor Lawrence Springborg AM (pictured) said,

“Throughout this process, it became clear to the committee that the funding model and regulatory demands of the aged care industry were not viable for this site. In addition, the community is fortunate that the Inglewood Hospital now has beds for high-care long-term patients, providing a much-needed local solution for this type of care, something that wasn’t available when Casa Mia was first established.

“Once aged care was removed as a viable option, there was a consideration that council may play a more hands-on role in the solution.”

He admitted it was a large amount of money to be spent for a non-core business of council.

“The entire footprint of the land we have secured is 2.237ha, which provides the opportunity for council to explore additional income options to recoup the costs,” he added.
