Benetas to refurbish ageing retirement village for affordable housing with women prioritised

1 min read

The ageing single-bedsits, built around 1960, in the Victorian Not For Profit's St Laurence Court Retirement Village in California Gully, Bendigo, 150km northwest of Melbourne's CBD, built around 1960, are to be transformed.

Work is to begin converting the village into 38 two-bedroom units, to be used as affordable housing for people aged 55 and older.

Older single women – the fastest growing cohort of homeless Australians – will be prioritised by Benetas with the first residents expected to move in by the end of 2024.

The adjoining Benetas Eaglehawk residential aged care home will be subject to minor impacts during the refurbishment works.

Benetas also runs retirement villages in Roxburgh Park (Bridgewater Lake), Mooroolbark (St John’s Rise) and Traralgon (Dalkeith Heights).
