The times they are a-changin': Geelong’s first vertical retirement village complex

After “years in the making”, Lineal Developments has approval to build an 11-storey block for 87 one-, two- and three-bedroom independent living units for retirees, a first in Victoria’s second biggest city.

The 2,355msq project, which is located within the city’s health precinct, will offer in-home care and multiple on-site services, including an allied health facility and a range of activity rooms.

Lineal Developments has two directors, Mick Aylett and Darren Muir. Mick said the state government’s Department of Transport and Planning’s (DTP) approval came after one floor was shelved. It will still stand about 10m above the “preferred maximum building height” for the area.

National planning and design firm Tract managed the planning process on behalf of Lineal.

Mick said Lineal would appoint an operator to oversee the day-to-day management of the site once construction was completed.

Construction will commence in the near future and residents could begin moving in from late 2026 or early 2027, he said.

Rather than purchasing an apartment, residents would effectively be offered a “lifetime lease” with an annual fee.
