There were 1,891 people under the age of 65 living in residential aged care as of 30 September 2023, a 29% decrease from 12 months prior, but still well short of the Government's target of having no people of that age living in aged care homes by 2025, only 15 months' time.
The Government's first Younger People in Residential Aged Care Target was that by 2022, apart from in exceptional circumstances, no people under the age of 65 would enter residential aged care. But in the three months from July to September 2023, 83 people under the age of 65 moved into residential aged care, a slight uptick from 74 the previous quarter.
The second target was that no people under the age of 45 would be living in residential aged care by 2022. As of 30 September 2023, 43 people under the age of 45 were still living in residential aged care. Though not meeting the intended target, it was a 43% decrease on the previous corresponding period.
Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison committed to the three targets in November 2019 following a recommendation in the Interim Report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
