ACT Greens ‘to explore’ publicly owned affordable retirement village

1 min read

The incumbent Labor–Greens Coalition government, currently led by Chief Minister Andrew Barr, will attempt to win a seventh term when the nation's capital city goes to the polls on Saturday, 19 October.

ACT Greens on 10 September released a press release: 'Greens eye public retirement village as part of housing crisis plan' where it seeks a new Homelessness Services Project Fund.

“As part of our plan to build 10,000 more affordable public homes, we will  investigate setting up a public retirement village to address the increasing unaffordability of retirement, and give older Canberrans more affordable housing choices," said ACT Greens Candidate for Brindabella, Sam Nugent.

Deputy Leader of the ACT Greens, Rebecca Vassarotti said the Greens were the only party, at the moment, offering to build housing to fix the homelessness crisis.

The sector's #1 website villages.com.au lists 37 retirement villages in the ACT. The median age in the ACT is expected to only rise from 35 years in 2021 to 37 years in 2060.
