The Acting Inspector-General of Aged Care, Ian Yates AM, has launched a review of My Aged Care, the gateway to access Government-funded aged care services, having identified it as a priority.
This review is the first time the Inspector-General will use its powers to investigate, make recommendations, and report to Parliament on the performance of a Commonwealth entity with responsibility for part of the aged care system.
The Inspector-General has asked the Office of the Inspector-General of Aged Care to examine whether My Aged Care, the entry point of Australia's aged care system, enables older Australians to initiate the assessment process for aged care in a timely manner, regardless of their location, health requirements, cultural background, identity, or prior knowledge of the system.
The Office is now accepting public submissions seeking input from people who have used My Aged Care in the past five years, who are currently using it, or who are planning to use it in the future. Submissions close 14 June 2024.
The Inspector-General will not publish progress or interim reports, but will provide a final report and any recommendations to the Aged Care Minister. The report will be tabled in both houses of Parliament and will be published on the Inspector-General's website.
The review is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
The Inspector-General of Aged Care was a recommendation of the Aged Care Royal Commission. After legislation was passed in August 2023, the Office commenced in October 2023 with the aim of shining "an independent light" on the aged care sector.
