International student number cuts may hit aged care workforce

With the Federal Government announcing it will set international student numbers at 270,000 for the 2025 calendar year, a cut of nearly 20,000 from the current year, aged care providers may see an important pool of aged care workers diminished.

Student visa holders are “crucial” for the aged care sector, particularly in regional areas, Tom Symondson, CEO of Aged Care and Community Providers’ Association, told The Weekly SOURCE.

“The aged care sector faces unprecedented workforce shortages, so is heavily reliant on a diverse workforce, including those on student visas,” Tom said.

A 2022 report by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) put the aged care workforce shortage at 35,000 per annum

“Given the 24/7 nature of aged care services and the flexibility that student visa holders offer during peak periods and leave times, their continued inclusion in the sector’s workforce is crucial," Tom said.

“They fill vital roles that support the well-being of older Australians, particularly in regions where workforce shortages are most acute.”

Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours a fortnight. There are no caps when their study is not in session.
