52 aged care projects, mostly outside the major cities, will benefit from the grant allocation. The largest grant, worth more than $27 million, has been allocated to Harbison's Burradoo aged care home in Bowral, just over 100km south of Sydney in the NSW Southern Highlands.
Of the $250 million total, $50 million has been allocated specifically to support older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders. $25 million has been allocated to building a 100-bed aged care home for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Perth. Sister Kate's Aboriginal Health & Aged Care Service is the first project of its kind in the region.
The $250 million dollar commitment follows Round 1, when $134.9 million was allocated to 76 infrastructure projects, mainly in small rural towns, and remote and very remote communities. Round 1 was fiercely contested, with 297 applications for projects worth $1 billion, but only $135 million available.
“Round 2 of ACCAP will help rural and remote aged care providers to deliver appropriate cultural care and create more home-like environments, with comfortable and modern amenities, more liveable spaces and fewer shared rooms," said Minister for Aged Care, Anika Wells.
