In mid-December last year, the Inspector-General of Aged Care, the new independent body that will provide oversight of the aged care system, released its first Annual Work Plan.

The one-page plan lays out the activities the IGAC will perform over the remainder of the 2023-24 year.

Topping the list is the office's review of the Australian Government's My Aged Care, which has experienced issues with accessibility and missing data. The review will begin in March 2024, and will consider if the Government's aged care portal for consumers is fit for purpose.

In the first half of 2024, the IGAC will also begin the considerable job of monitoring of the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, the Department of Health and Aged Care, the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority, and the Complaints Management Framework.

The independent body will also provide a report on the implementation of the Aged Care Royal Commission Recommendations by 1 July 2024, just over five months' away.

Just before Christmas, the IGAC released its Corporate Plan 2023-24, which provides a four-year plan of how the body will deliver its functions.

The IGAC says it is still considering what its objectives will be.

"We will continue to refine our strategic objectives and our performance measures over the next plan and beyond, as we move past our establishment phase," the Corporate Plan states. 

"As a new body we have bold ambitions. We are starting with a robust plan, but it is not set in stone. We will be further engaging with our stakeholders and deepening our understanding of the sector through rigorous monitoring and analysis. This will help us to decide where to focus our efforts, what we can deliver, and what we will prioritise."
