Seniors to live in 43sqm homes in social housing trial in Perth, Western Australia

Four seniors from the public housing list are going to be the first to live in tiny houses being proposed for social housing in the State. 

Western Australian Government Housing Minister John Carey unveiled the Summit Homes’ tiny homes in Spearwood, 18km south of Perth CBD, on Wednesday, 13 March. Housing Minister John Carey and Summit Homes managing director David Simpson. 

The homes are roughly the size of a large shipping container and fit one bedroom and one bathroom in a 43sqm frame. They were built offsite at a Summit Homes modular prefabrication facility, at a cost to the government of $250,000 each. 

The Minister said the pilot showed the government was thinking out of the box to address the state’s housing crisis. 

He also announced the government had reached the halfway point on its commitment to build 4000 new social housing homes.
