Historic Sydney sports club plans Waverley retirement village to save it from closure

Easts Group has revealed it will turn the Birrell St site of the Waverley Bowling Club into a retirement village and childcare centre after re-locating the bowls club to the North Bondi golf course.

The Group, which is home to the Sydney Roosters NRL Club, will then re-develop the North Bondi site into a multi-purpose sports centre with two new bowling greens.

Club members will vote on the plans on July 25, but Bondi Golf and Diggers Club president Gordon Rice said the club might not survive another 12 months because of financial hardship.

“That will keep us going and it will be good for the whole district,” he told The Daily Telegraph.
