"Gaps in Aged Care Underscore Need for Holistic Reforms": John Pollaers

John Pollaers OAM, former Chair of the Aged Care Workforce Taskforce, has expressed concern about deficiencies in the care provided to older Australians despite ongoing reforms.

The Aged Care Workforce Industry Council, a notable recommendation from the Taskforce, ceased operations earlier this month.

Speaking to The SOURCE, Pollaers pinpointed areas of concern, like the lack of dental care coverage under Medicare for older Australians, given their increased vulnerability to dental issues. A Senior Dental Benefits Scheme remains unactioned despite its recommendation by the Royal Commission.

Pollaers advocates for future reforms to embrace a holistic approach, addressing cognitive health, lifestyle goals, community engagement, rehabilitation, cultural needs, and more.

“Means testing” has the potential to refine aged care quality, Pollaers said, acknowledging that society’s vulnerable segments should continue to be supported.

Discussing the Taskforce’s achievements, Pollaers said, “The ‘A Matter of Care’ report steered subsequent reforms. The industry's commitment has been commendable, and it's imperative to maintain this positive momentum with a keen eye on outcomes.”

As the Advisory Board Chair for Ending Loneliness Together, a national organisation aimed at raising awareness and reduced the effects of loneliness, Pollaers stressed the importance of robust community connections, especially as Australia leans into home care. Citing United Kingdom initiatives, he emphasised the necessity for community-driven initiatives for seniors.

“Support for seniors at home is not negotiable,” he said.
