One of the most notable features of Australia's aged care system in recent years has been the rapid growth in home care - the number of Australians with a Home Care Package has nearly tripled from 93,331 in December 2018 to 269,573 in December 2023.
Research shows that 70% of older Australians wish to age in place, and the growth in Home Care Packages means this is increasingly possible.
With the expansion of the sector, there has also been an increase in the number of home care providers, in contrast to residential aged care, where the number of providers is declining as the sector consolidates.
According to KPMG's seventh and latest annual Aged Care Market Analysis, there was a 2% increase in the number of home care providers in FY23 - PlanCare and 101 Home Care are two of the largest new entrants.
Note that the list reflects the 2022-23 financial year. Since the list was compiled, Australian Unity has acquired myHomecare.
