“It’s horrific out there”: resident-on-resident abuse on the rise in retirement villages

1 min read

Craig Bennett, President of the NSW Retirement Village Residents Association (RVRA), and Judy Mayfield, President of the Association of Residents of Queensland Retirement Villages (ARQRV) are united.

Both tell The Weekly SOURCE that the issue of resident-on-resident abuse is at levels never seen before.

“It is a significant problem – resident against resident,” said Craig. “It is horrific out there.”

Judy agreed it is a major issue.

“A large operator in Queensland told the village’s residents committee it had to stop. It is bullying and I think it is the village manager’s role to put a stop to it.

“I think most operators would be worried.”

Judy added that such abuse is a breach of the state’s Retirement Villages Act 1999 and QLD’s Human Rights Act 2019.

“The police department has an abuse unit, which covers elder abuse, and I am thinking of inviting them in to speak to the residents in the villages.”
