Editorial: Can retirement living operators continue to ignore ‘care’? No

Ever since the listed developers piled into the retirement village sector in the early 2000s, the sector has been asking: Are retirement villages a property play or a care play?

The last 15 years has confirmed that villages are now firmly in the latter – with the most successful operators in Australia those with a strong care proposition including Ryman Healthcare and Australian Unity.

It’s no longer enough for retirement villages to simply offer a clubhouse and community facilities – you need to be able to guide your residents along the ageing journey and where possible, assist them in maintaining their health and wellbeing.

One operator that has made this goal part of their mission is Catholic Not For Profit Calvary Health Care.

This issue, we turn the spotlight on its Calvary Kooyong development, a new precinct that brings together retirement living, aged care and healthcare to deliver on its vision for integrated care.

It’s a model that is already delivering real health and quality of benefits to its village residents – and one that is likely to find more traction.

The Federal Government’s Aged Care Taskforce has set down care in the home and personal contributions to accommodation and daily living expenses as its underlying principles for a new aged care funding model.

At the same time, the expectation of Baby Boomers and their families that they will be able to receive care and support from the time they downsize to the end of life – and be able to pay for it – will only increase.

Can you say that your organisation is prepared for this future?
