In regional areas, support for people living with dementia can often be hundreds of kilometres away with services limited in their scope. Not For Profit community organisation Heathcote Dementia Alliance (HDA) is seeking to tackle this problem with a unique solution: small, hi-tech homes that can literally be delivered on the back of a truck.
The organisation is set to begin field testing its 1.5-bedroom SmartCare Villa prototype, Costerfield House, next month. This marks a key step towards commercialising the concept through its sister company, CareVillas Australia.
As we reported last year, HDA was established in 2014 in Heathcote, Victoria, 100km north of Melbourne, a housing solution and respite, particularly for people living with dementia in rural and regional areas. The prototype followed a visit to the world’s first dementia village, De Hogeweky in the Netherlands.
