Kiama Council’s Blue Haven RAC re-accredited despite financial woes

1 min read

Kiama Municipal Council’s troubled Blue Haven Bonaira aged care home has officially been re-accredited by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.

The unprofitable facility – which Kiama Council voted to sell off last month, reversing an earlier decision that kept it on Council’s books – has been accredited to April 2025 following an audit in September.

“We are pleased to achieve accreditation given the difficulties and challenges faced by both our service and the industry generally,” said Blue Haven’s Interim Chief Operating Officer Joe Gaudiosi.

“The challenges including the workforce shortages, new aged care reforms and dealing with COVID-19 cannot be overstated.”

Blue Haven Bonaira lost $660,000 over the month of July, and Kiama Council is planning to sell it along with its 59 attached independent living units; the 203 ILUs at Blue Haven Terralong will be retained.
