Group Homes Australia can provide specialised dementia care and support to retirement village residents

1 min read

Group Homes Australia, which operates 22 specialist dementia homes in Sydney, can partner with retirement village operators to provide short-term accommodation, support and education for their own residents living with dementia.

Group Homes Australia was founded in 2012 by Tamar Krebs with a vision to ‘Do Dementia Differently’

The provider now has nearly two dozen homes in Sydney nestled in traditional communities and can deliver care for people with both late and younger onset dementia, as well as neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, traumatic brain injury and stroke.

GHA provides 24/7 dementia care and flexible respite short stays, long-term permanent care, and end-of-life and palliative care.

It’s through these different care options that Group Homes Australia can support people living in retirement village communities.

“People living with dementia don’t need to move out of their home in the village,” said Tamar.

“As the brain changes with the disease, they can move in with us for a short-term respite stay and be upskilled and equipped with the knowledge to be able to return to and continue to live well at home in the village.”

GHA also delivers free Government-funded, 5-day live-in retreats, run in GHA homes or regional Airbnbs, where people with a recent dementia diagnosis and their families can receive support and information about how to continue living in their retirement village.

There are also GHA’s regular ‘Demystifying Dementia’ complementary education sessions, which provide strategies and tools to improve quality of life for people living with dementia and their loved ones.
