Living with dementia
How Group Homes Australia is doing dementia respite care differently

With unmatched flexibility and no waitlists, the innovative dementia care provider is rethinking how respite care can be delivered to people living with dementia.

Unlike other providers’ Cottage Respite service, Group Homes Australia’s Flexible Respite is adapted to each family’s needs.

Tamar Krebs, Group Homes Australia’s Founder and Executive Director, says, “We work with a lot of families, and we know from this that we need to be much more focused on meeting their specific needs.

“We recognise the importance of being able to offer different kinds of respite, so that people can choose what suits them best based on what stage they are at in their dementia journey,” she said.

Group Homes Australia offers a choice of three Flexible Respite options:

Flex Stay: For those needing 24/7 supervision and care. With a 1:4 ratio of Homemakers to Residents, overnight supervision, clinical care, and social worker support, Group Homes Australia provides comprehensive support and education for families. Whether it’s overnight respite care, a break for a day or up to eight weeks, the services are designed to accommodate the family’s needs and schedule.

Flex R&R: For those seeking a break from daily routines and a chance to socialise, R&R offers a blend of engaging social activities and community interaction. The R&R experience-led itinerary includes visits to art galleries, restaurants, bushwalks and of course plenty of nutritious meals, rest and support from skilled carers. R&R also focuses on educating the person living with dementia and their support network to adapt to life’s changes and support their return home.

Flex Trial: For families considering a longer-term stay or move-in option, Group Homes Australia can offer a 21-day respite trial, including all meals and activities, family meetings with observations, and guidance for next steps toward moving in.

Flexible Repite with GHA can be funded through:

  • HCP Unspent funds – as a Home Care Provider, Unspent Funds can be used to pay for some, or all the Flexible Respite stay.
  • NDIS Short Term Accommodation (only for Flex Stay and Flex Trial).
  • Private Pay.
