Most significant changes proposed for land lease sector in a generation

1 min read

The NSW Government is on the cusp of allowing more land lease communities to be built in the state.

Tom Kearney, Executive Director Policy & Programs, Building Commission NSW, gave a comprehensive briefing on the proposed changes to Part 6 of the "Consolidated Building Bill" to the Urban Development Institute of Australia (NSW) Seniors Living and Land Lease briefing on 4 March.

He revealed the key changes would make the approved pathway for a land lease community be like any other building development, streamlining approvals for manufactured homes under Section 68 of the Local Government Act.

“If the proposals are approved, it will mean the development of land lease communities will be the most straight forward it has ever been,” said Charles Kekovich, Director - Greater Western Sydney, Urban Development Institute of Australia (NSW).

“All the changes UDIA sought look to have been proposed for approval. They will make it easier to build a land lease community.

“This is outside of Sydney as the metropolitan rule banning land lease communities remains.”

Stockland Halcyon Gables land lease lifestyle community, part of Stockland’s The Gables residential estate, in Sydney’s The Hills Shire, which is under construction, is the nearest to invading the metropolitan rule.

Bob Browne, General Counsel at the Land Lease Living Industry Association of NSW, Manufactured Housing Industry Association of NSW and Caravan & Camping Industry Association of NSW, is meeting with Building Commission NSW tomorrow (Wednesday).
