New modular homes for seniors in West Australian town

1 min read

Just three two-bedroom, one-bathroom homes will be available for seniors on the public housing waitlist in Manjimup, a town 307km south of Perth, in early 2025.

The modular houses have been added to the 26-lot Cherry Glades development site on the original Manjimup Primary School.

In 2017, the Western Government's Department of Communities proposed the progressive development of 55 new homes tailored for people over the age of 55.

“Since the Cook Labor Government’s record $3.6 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures, we’ve added more than 2,600 social homes, with more than 1,000 social homes currently under contract or construction throughout Western Australia,” said Housing Minister John Carey in a media release

Of the proposed 55 homes in Cherry Glades, only around five will be public housing for over 55s.

Throughout the project, eligible people over 65 could enter a co-ownership arrangement with the State Government, where the home owner would pay for 65% of the property and the State Government would pay the remainder.

Manjimup Shire Community Services Director Gail Ipsen Cutts said the trial, a pilot program for the State, was borne out of the Shire staff’s concerns about potential homeowners being able to afford the homes even when selling properties they already owned.
