Anglican Care, an agency of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle, has announced it is closing two aged care homes.
In a letter to residents and families, the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle, Peter Stuart, said Cedar Wharf Lodge in Bulahdelah (pictured above), 93km northeast of Newcastle, was now unable to provide a suitable quality of care.
“Due to its age it has reached its full life and can no longer support the quality of care and service needed,” he said.
“The decision to close has been taken after a comprehensive review of Anglican Care residential aged care facilities over the past 12 months.”
Cedar Wharf Lodge opened in 1991 as Great Lakes Nursing Home, a community-owned business, with 57 beds. Newcastle-based Anglican Care took it over in 2017.
The home currently has 35 residents who will begin to leave from 21 March before a scheduled closure on 30 May.
Second home to be shut down
Anglican Care said Greenmount Gardens at Mt Hutton, a suburb of Lake Macquarie, 14km west-southwest of Newcastle, was also to close.
Bishop Stuart said Greenmount Gardens currently had 33 residents who would need to be moved.
The decision by Anglican Care follows Southern Cross Care NSW and ACT, which announced it would close two aged care homes last month.
Anglican Care will have nine residential aged care homes, six retirement villages and a home care service after the two homes close.
