The 140-bed facility, Protea by Prescare, includes a 20-place dementia special care unit and aims to ease pressure on the local Townsville Hospital.
Protea’s manager Rick van Groningen said the development would fill a crucial gap in services and reduce the “backlog” of patients who typically wait hours for treatment in the hospital’s emergency department.
The development will be PresCare’s sixth residential aged care facility in Queensland – but the organisation has not yet branched out into other states.
The charge for a standard room at Protea will include a $350,000 fully refundable deposit (RAD).
