The Monash University research analysed 28 forensic medical examinations of female aged care residents who had allegedly been victims of sexual assault in Victoria between 2000 and 2015.
The survey found all 14 perpetrators who were reported by male, half of whom were staff and the other half residents.
The majority of the victims has some form of cognitive or physical impairment, while most of the reports didn’t indicate if the alleged victim had received treatment for the assault.
In total, the reports finds the Department of Health was notified of 396 reports of alleged or suspected unlawful sexual contact of Australian aged care residents in 2015-16 – but concludes many cases likely go unreported.
Terrible findings – and ones we are likely to hear more of as the Royal Commission unfolds.
