Executive Director Daniel Gannon said it is time to engage all village operators to participate – it is simply not good enough that less than 40% of retirement villages are subscribers to its Code of Conduct launched six years ago.
He states that after the concerted activist attack on the village business model by the ABC, he advocates the sector’s total support is required for sector credibility.
It has cost $250 per village and $2.50 per unit annually to subscribe to the Code but from November, when fees are due, fee will drop to $150 per village and $1.50 per unit.
"As we’ve declared publicly on several occasions recently, we are supportive of strengthened dispute resolution bodies in addition to deepening industry uptake of the Code of Conduct,” he told members.
"We are committed to higher professional and community standards in retirement villages across Australia – sentiment that underpinned the creation of the Code five years ago.
"From next month there will be significant changes to the fee structure of the Code, with an external review of this important framework underway. These decisions were taken some months ago to ensure that we are increasing code compliance around Australia.
"It's frankly too important to not get this right for the 250,000 older Australians who call one of our communities ‘home’ and for the future generations of residents yet to move in."
