Village residents spur NSW Trading into action over poor Rules of Conduct compliance

1 min read

NSW Fair Trading is conducting three retirement village audits a month to ensure its Rules of Conduct are being complied with, and issuing infringements.

To date 174 inspections of retirement villages have taken place since the Rules of Conduct for operators of retirement villages took effect on 1 July 2019.

The rules include matters such as professionalism, manager and staff training, competencies, performance and behaviors in connection with the management or operation of retirement villages in NSW.

"The majority of these inspections were unannounced, with sites chosen based on intelligence gathering and consumer feedback,” a spokesperson said.

Seventeen villages have been found wanting in their compliance, or 10% of audits.

The number of complaints to the Department are significantly higher than many people believe is the case, based on our conversations.
