Mike Baird pens his farewell to staff - and the sector - as HammondCare CEO

The former NSW Premier, who spoke at The Weekly SOURCE’s LEADERS SUMMIT in March, has signed off from the Not for Profit Christian provider of aged care and health services including residential care, home care, community health and hospital care.

“As I was writing this for my team at HammondCare, I realised it applied to the entire sector. Thank you to all those who work in aged care and health - you are making a difference!

I am sad because this has undoubtedly been a career highlight. HammondCare is a united group of people who are determined to improve quality of life for people in need. It is not just words, it is actions, and I have seen it every day.

It is simply amazing.

It has also been a tough four years and while no one plans for a Royal Commission or a COVID pandemic - I am proud to see how strongly you have all come through this.

Your resilience and sheer determination have ensured that HammondCare remains in a very strong position to continue to care as it has done for 92 years.

I am also incredibly thankful.

From my first buddy shift to my regular visits to our care homes, hospitals and home care regions, I have watched and sometimes cried. The tears were ones of sheer appreciation and wonder at all those in the frontline.

I don’t think many across Australia know the lengths you all went through in COVID and indeed every day to help give dignity, respect and care until the last breath for those in need.

I do. We deeply live our aspiration to care for those that others won’t or can’t and it is beautiful.

While the recent wage rises are long overdue, these also tell me that finally what you do is being valued by Governments and the community. There is still a long way to go but I want you to know that I am forever indebted for the work you do.

I am delighted that Andrew Thorburn will now assume the CEO role and he will make a massive contribution, not just to HammondCare, but the sector.

Thank you for your support and I will always count my time with you as a gift.”
