Telstra and Optus began closing down their 3G networks on 28 October 2024, with Telstra saying it will take about a week to shutdown their network, and Optus saying the process could take months.
Devices that may be affected include phones, smartwatches, tablets, wearable devices, monitoring devices, medical alarms, and personal emergency response solutions (PERS).
Of particular concern are some 4G phones that use the 3G network for emergency calls, which are essential for older people and those who care for them. Users of affected 4G phones may not be aware their devices are affected.
The networks were scheduled to shut down in August 2024, and prior to that in June. Each time the shutdown was delayed due to concerns about people still using the networks.
TPG Telecom/Vodafone switched off its 3G network in January 2024. Now the Telstra and Optus shutdown is proceeding, with most aged care devices and operations prepared.
The shutdown is needed to boost the capacity of the provider's 4G and 5G networks.
