Well-known for his retirement villages for clients such as Anglicare Southern Queensland, Aura Holdings, Aveo, Mercy Health, Odyssey Communities and RetireAustralia, Hutchinson Builders’ chairman Scott Hutchinson says he doesn’t want any work.
To maintain historic penetration at 6% of all people 75+, 5,500 new village homes a year need to be built, but just 3,000 are being constructed in a good year. Scott’s words make for grim reading.
“We want more projects to stall so that the industry can get back on its feet,” Scott (pictured) told The Urban Developer. “We don’t want any more work to start. That’s what’s causing the problem, it’s too much work.”
Family-owned Hutchinson Builders is Australia’s largest privately owned construction company.
Scott said the industry is in for another “rubbish year”.
“We need a recession and a drought and things will get back to normal … and I reckon we might get both.”
In simple terms, if you haven’t got a development already in the pipeline, forget it for the meantime.
