Anne Burgess AM has been appointed Chair of the Aged Care Council of Elders, the body that advises the government from the perspective of older Australians about aged care reforms.

Anne takes over from Ian Yates AM, who is currently Interim Inspector-General of Aged Care. Anne will fill the role for two years.

Anne has more than 40 years leading social justice initiatives and organisations. She was with the Equal Opportunity Commission for more than 10 years, most recently in the role of Associate Commissioner. She has been on the Board of the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) for more than five years.

Anne said, “I am proud to take on the role of Chair of the Council of Elders. I am committed to working with council members and the Government to ensure the rights and dignity of older people from all walks of life are protected in our future aged care system.”

Minister for Aged Care, Anika Wells, said, “The appointment of Anne Burgess to Chair of the Council of Elders is part of our ongoing agenda to ensure older peoples’ needs are front and centre as we reform aged care.

“The Council of Elders plays a critical role in ensuring the diverse views and perspectives of older people are heard by the Government throughout the reform process."
