The South Australian Government will compulsorily acquire a shuttered retirement village in Adelaide to build a new extension to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The empty Sutherland Court Retirement Village, which sits on 4,300 square metres of land opposite the hospital in the Adelaide suburb of Woodville, will be torn down and replaced with a new 24-bed mental health rehabilitation unit at a cost of $44 million.
Chris Picton (pictured), SA Minister for Health & Wellbeing, said the unit will improve patient flow at the hospital.
“Our hospitals have experienced high levels of demand in recent years and an additional 24 mental health rehabilitation beds will play a crucial role in assisting to reduce the length of stay for patients in acute wards, reducing access block from the emergency departments,” he said.
Before it closed, Sutherland Court offered independent living units, assisted living, and respite care.
Demolition will begin this year, with an expected completion date in 2025.
