Expansion of quality indicators in residential aged care homes

1 min read

The National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program (QI Program) is expanding in residential and in-home aged care.

After talks with seniors, aged care providers and peak organisations, the QI Program will be expanded to include:

  • An additional four quality indicators for residential aged care;
  • Up to five quality indicators for in-home aged care; and
  • Consumer experience and quality of life measures for residential and in-home aged care.

The new quality indicators relate to medication management, falls and major injury. They were part of the 2019–20 Budget Measure “More Choices for a Longer Life – Mandatory National Quality Indicators and Reducing the Misuse of Medicines in Residential Aged Care”.

Pressure injuries, physical restraint and unplanned weight loss quality indicators have been revamped.

The QI Program requires residential aged care providers to report on crucial areas of care to support quality improvement and improved health outcomes for residents.
