Prahran residents have been angered by the fast-track approval of a six-level aged care facility from private operator Lifeview, designed to cater for LGBTI residents. ​

The home is among 10 projects given the tick of approval by Victorian Planning Minister Richard Wynne with the approval of the COVID Building Recovery Taskforce.

The new aged care facility will be constructed by CHT Architects and implement a ‘Small House’ model of care, with residences grouped into small ‘Houses’ of 12 - 14 rooms.

The development has twice been rejected by the local Stonnington Council and has been also knocked back by the state planning tribunal and the Supreme Court.

Stonnington mayor Steve Stefanopoulos said the approval was “not consistent with community expectations for the site” and cited concerns from locals regarding the home’s height and size, saying, “It is too big and bulky with inadequate setbacks”.

But CHT says the use of building setbacks and existing historic buildings, will help the facility “fit harmoniously within the urban streetscape of Greville and Charles Streets, and to fit more than harmoniously into the urban environment of Prahran.”

Lifeview has four aged care homes across Melbourne.
