Melbourne council knocks back Calvary’s 19-storey health and retirement development

1 min read

Calvary Health Care Bethlehem’s $90M proposal to redevelop its hospital and build an 80-bed aged care home and 85 independent living units, in Caulfield South, 10km southeast from the Melbourne CBD, could still go ahead however.

Calvary Health Care Bethlehem CEO Dr Jane Fischer said they were “disappointed” with the council decision and would be looking at ways to move the 19-storey development forward.

Glen Eira Council’s Mayor Mary Delahunty claims the Not For Profit is exploiting a planning loophole that allows retirement villages to exceed the area’s eight-metre height restrictions and is calling for a clear definition of the term “independent living unit”.

Calvary is clearly in expansion mode – they are currently constructing the largest private hospital to ever be built in SA, the $300M Calvary Adelaide Hospital in the city’s CBD.
