Oakden update: SA state-run facilities face review but staff stay on the job

1 min read

The operator of the now infamous Oakden Older Persons Mental Health facility is the SA Government. It has now announced its 46 aged care facilities and 19 mental health inpatient services will undergo an independent audit following the recent revelations about failings at Oakden.

Two of the facility’s three wards are being closed, while a third ward is being moved.

SA Health has confirmed the 21 Oakden staff referred to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) are still employed by the Government pending a full inquiry.

12 of the staff have been removed from the facility on full pay, while another nine have been allowed to stay at work while inquiries continue.

Minister for Aged Care Ken Wyatt has also appointed a two-person panel to review national aged care quality processes. Kate Carnell AO, a well-known public administrator and regulator, will lead the Review, with Professor Ron Paterson ONZM, an international expert on healthcare quality.
