Sanctions at Multicultural Aged Care Illawarra due to 'severe risk' to residents

The Not For Profit aged care and retirement living provider has had sanctions imposed on it after failing 39 out of 42 quality standards during an audit by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) last November.

The sanctions, imposed in December, prevent the aged care home from receiving Commonwealth funding for new admissions over the next six months and the possible loss of its accreditation if staff aren’t adequately retrained.

After the audit, it was determined residents at the aged care home were at immediate and severe risk after not receiving safe and effective care.

Some residents were found to have been given the incorrect medications, without the correct diagnosis, while on another occasion a resident who had taken a fall had not been closely monitored afterwards.

The report earmarked eight areas that required immediate improvement including personal and clinical care and consumer dignity and choice.

MACI was also ordered to hire an external adviser who will help the aged care home achieve compliance in all standards before 12 May, when the sanctions will be lifted.
