Sydney aged care worker sentenced after assaulting residents

1 min read

An aged care worker who assaulted seven vulnerable residents at a home in Sydney’s Inner West has been given a seven-month Intensive Correction Order (ICO).

As we reported here, Tovale Kalati, 57, from Yagoona, pled guilty to assaulting seven residents at Presbyterian Aged Care’s Ashfield aged care home between February to October 2019.

Ms Kalati reportedly worked at the home for 10 years before her employment was terminated by the operator after the allegations emerged.

In addition to her seven-month ICO, Ms Kalati has been ordered to remain on good behaviour and comply with a treatment plan.

Magistrate Alison Viney described the case as “extremely sad”.

“All (victims) were vulnerable residents put in the home by their family where they should have undergone specialised care,” she told the court.

“Instances like striking a person on the back of the head and placing a pillow on an individual’s face... then laughing are certainly the antithesis for what one would expect.”
