The Cairns Regional Council has approved a development application from the estate of Rose Stragusz, a prominent local who died in 2019, and Gilvear Planning Pty Ltd for a 162-place retirement and care facility.

The proposal will see the retirement village built on a sugarcane farm on Draper Road in Gordonvale, 24km south of Cairns.

The development will be made up of 96 three-bedroom apartments, 44 two-bedroom-apartments and 22 one-bedroom-apartments, a subdivision of 51 new residential lots was also submitted as part of the proposal.

The central theme for the village is to create a location where residents will be able to age in place by supplying the level of care required through all the stages of ageing.

“There are also great advances in technology which will be incorporated in the development,” the development application stated.

“Whereby staff and indeed offsite family members can unobtrusively monitor the wellbeing of residents and immediately provide care or assistance in need.”

The development intends to engage with local education institutions to facilitate training in the aged care space, as well as training within the facility, to provide the level of care required to create the ageing in place model.
