Its new $80M headquarters will be known as ‘U City’ as a marketing brand and to reflect the design of the multi-use building which includes six floors of retirement living residences.
“It’s modern, simple and a little bit quirky, reflecting the essence of the wide range of vital services Uniting Communities provides to South Australians in need,” Chief Executive Simon Schrapel says.
Construction company Built will now commence work on the building, which has been designed to a minimum five star green rating and will include a 50 kilowatt solar system on the roof.
The project is being bankrolled by Uniting’s own funds plus a $7.44 million State Govt grant according to Adelaide Now, a sign of Uniting Communities’ sway in SA.
The Not For Profit also had to persuade the State Govt to remove a provisional heritage listing to tear down the Maughan Church, which had occupied the site since 1965 and was listed by the Australian Institute of Architects’ SA chapter as one of the state’s most significant buildings.
Uniting Communities currently has more than 1,500 staff and volunteers delivering community services to over 20,000 people in SA every year.
