Uniting NSW.ACT is hoping for a full house at the inaugural Rev. Harry Herbert address, which will be given by former High Court Justice The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG.
Harry (pictured) was Executive Director of UnitingCare NSW and the ACT for 26 years. He was responsible for building the combined community service, advocacy and chaplaincy organisation that became Uniting NSW.ACT, now one of the largest Not for Profit organisations in Australia.
His significant legacy also includes the consolidation of the church’s work in aged care that has strengthened the contribution being made to support older people now and into the future, and the establishment of and advocacy for the Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) at Kings Cross, Sydney, which has saved countless lives.
This year’s oration is themed around aged care reform – in particular the ageism implicit in society’s current approach to aged care – and the potential, following the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, to consider aged care as a human rights issue.
There will also be a panel discussion after the speech with Robert Tickner AO, Co-Chair EveryAGE Counts; Dr Kay Patterson AO, Age Discrimination Commissioner; and Mrs Tracey Burton, CEO and Executive Director, Uniting NSW.ACT. The discussion will be moderated by ABC journalist Stan Grant.
It is being held at St Stephen’s Uniting Church on Macquarie St, Sydney, on Wednesday, 5 October, at 6pm for a 6:30pm start. RSVP by 30 September HERE.
