A former Aveo facility in the Brisbane suburb of Clayfield will be converted into social housing following its purchase by the Queensland Government.
The 30-unit site – formerly Aveo Freedom Aged Care Clayfield – was closed last year after having been acquired in Aveo’s purchase of Freedom Aged Care in 2016; it ran on the Freedom model of private aged care under the Retirement Villages Act.
Aveo listed the property for sale with vacant possession through CBRE, and it was sold in December to the Queensland Government for $9.4 million. In a statement, Communities and Housing Minister Leeanne Enoch (pictured) said refurbishment is underway to transform it into social housing suitable for seniors.
“This complex will provide safe, secure and affordable housing for older adults, possibly including those who may be downsizing from larger social homes.“We will support the tenants as they transition to their new homes and will consider on-site supports as part of our service delivery model,” she said.
The Queensland Government says it is investing $3.9 billion in social and affordable housing.
