HammondCare commits 15 beds to people living with dementia stuck in hospital beds in Adelaide

15 beds at HammondCare Daw Park dementia care village, within the new Repat Health Precinct, will be made available to people living with dementia who are occupying public hospital beds and awaiting an aged care placement.

The $31 million, 70-place Daw Park dementia care village, located a few kilometres south of the Adelaide CBD, opened last year, delivered by HammondCare in partnership with the Federal and State Government.

The 'Care Awaiting Placement' (CAP) program will not only provide home-like accommodation for people living with dementia, it will help alleviate pressure on Adelaide's public hospitals.

Ambulance ramping outside South Australian emergency departments increased to 3,960 hours in January, up from 3,595 hours in December, and not far below November's record-breaking 4,285 hours, or 178 days lost to ramping.

A recent audit of bed capacity across South Australia's local health networks found approximately 45 hospital inpatients were ready for discharge at any time but remained in hospital waiting for a suitable dementia specific bed in a residential aged care home.
