Talking point – World-leading dementia solution is right under our nose

1 min read

Tamar Krebs’ Group Homes Australia (GHA), founded in 2012, provides a home for people living with dementia in regular houses on regular streets.

Residents are encouraged to live in much the way they always have, to continue pursuing their interests, maintaining their routine, and helping with daily chores, if they wish.

This comes at a time when aged care operators are having to deal with increasing numbers of residents living with dementia.

With limited Government funding available for specialist dementia care, the options for new innovations and services within the traditional funding model remain few and far between.

Helen Workman, CEO of Sydney-based St Sergius Aged Care, told The Weekly SOURCE this week that around 80% of their 168 residents are living with dementia. And these numbers are set to go higher. It’s estimated that there will be 850,000 Australians living with dementia by 2058, more than double the number today.

As providers deliberate over the best way to service the current and future needs of residents with dementia, we believe GHA is a solution right under their nose: it is the best dementia service in the world.

Critically, GHA operates outside of the Aged Care Act – they are an approved home care and NDIS provider but not an approved residential aged care provider.

Residents pay $120,000 to $180,000 per year depending on the location, supplemented by their home care or NDIS funding.
