$12.17M Aboriginal Elders Village to be built in Adelaide

1 min read

The village is being funded by $4 million from the South Australia Government, $3 million from the Federal Government and $5.17 million, and the 1.5ha site, from the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC).

The Aboriginal Elders Village, named Purrkanaitya – for all Elders – will deliver 40 homes for tenants over 50, who are at risk of homelessness or already living in social housing.

Located near Living Kaurna Cultural Centre at Warriparinga (Bedford Park), 10km south of the Adelaide CBD, the accessibly designed housing will include communal areas and culturally significant fire pits.

Human Services Minister Nat Cook said the development would free up existing housing trust homes for Aboriginal clients seeking public housing and the most urgent at-risk category one applicants.

The village is a collaboration between Not For Profit housing provider Aboriginal Community Housing, ILSC, Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation (KYAC0, SA Housing Authority and Housing Australia.

KYAC Chair Tim Agius said Aboriginal Elders’ needs could not be met at typical aged care facilities and hoped the village would begin to fill the gap for older First Nations people.

“Our Elders have needed a place like this for a long time,” he said.

“KYAC is proud to be involved in the development that will include homes and shared spaces that are culturally appropriate and close to an important Dreaming story.

“Our Elders deserve nothing less.”
